An online survey conducted by TMP Directional Media showed that in the first quarter of 2007 local search business grew 20 percent. Local search showed a 40 percent increase in growth over general searches on sites like Google, Yahoo and MSN.

According to Riggs, local searches generally involve the service name and the name of the city. Online searches are translating into offline profits for local businesses. The same study also showed that 82 percent of online searchers eventually contacted a business offline.

“This is something that businesses need to consider,” Riggs said. “I think more and more searches are being done that way. Google is starting to recognize it more, and Yahoo has a local search engine specifically for local businesses and information.”
